Last night, I wrote lovingly about the craftsmanship of Tennessee Williams. Tonight, I add this proviso: his plays fall apart when you tamper with them. They are intricate spare machines, and sticking a few more gears in will only make them fly apart.
That said, Paul Newman is good. Geraldine Page, however, is astonishing! Especially when I only think of her as the old woman in The Trip to Bountiful. There is not one thing that character holds in common with this one. But they are both fully alive and complete in Page's hands. She earns the third star in my rating herself.
