I have just finished the Our Church Speaks illustrated devotional from InterVarsity Press, and I cannot recommend it highly enough! The book contains 52 “saints from every era and place.” Some have been beatified, but many have not. They are the saints in the general—not specific—sense. Each entry starts with a beautiful icon-inflected stylized portrait (by Lansing) and basic information (time, place, role, date of commemoration, and a quote). This is followed by a short summary of the person’s life and contributions to the Church, a chosen verse, an excellent devotional meditation (by Marotta) based on that saint’s life, and finally a prayer (a selection from The Book of Common Prayer that has had the saint’s name included in the text).
Every element of this book—and its father-project, ourchurchspeaks.com—is excellent and professional. The portraits are gorgeous and suitable for contemplation (see example below), and the devotional passages are truly profound, educational, and well-crafted.
The website includes over 250 saints, from Julian of Norwich to Dorothy L. Sayers (among them, Thomas Merton, G K. Chesterton, C. S. Lewis, John Donne…but NOT Hopkins…cough cough). I definitely suggest browsing the site and even purchasing a print or sticker or magnet of someone whose ministry and life has especially touched you. However, do not substitute that for getting/reading the book, because Marotta’s writing is consistently powerful. I found myself sharing quotes on Facebook almost weekly.
I am left longing for more, specifically a full year’s guide similar to this book (and Hopkins…cough cough). This devotional activates both sides of your brain and leads you to Christ through art, story, Scripture, prayer, and thoughtful lessons. Truly, get it!
