Louis Sachar is the cream of the crop when it comes to books for middle schoolers.  His first book, Sideways Stories from Wayside School, is a bonafide (and deserved) classic, and his book, Holes, was made into a career-starting Shia Labeouf movie.  Both books have spawned series, as has his Marvin Redpost books.
