While I was living in Taipei in 2005, there were often student demonstrations in the park against Chinese control. Passing on the bus one day, I saw what has become in my mind a truly Taiwanese joke. One of the handmade signs was written in English, with the delightful pun, “Peking Duck Off!” Today, watching Edward Yang’s 1994 film, A Confucian Confusion
